The NWLTG has been in existence for many years. It was revived in 2003 as a forum for local library employers to help support Coleg Llandrillo’s Information & Library Services NVQ provision. However, the training group soon developed a remit for general library training for staff across North Wales and has received funding for its activities from the National Assembly, via CyMAL, for the last four years. Regional training groups have existed in Wales for many years but the NWLTG was unique in that it has always included representation from outside the public library sector.
The group currently consists of the 6 local authority library services, 2 HE institutions, 7 FE colleges, in addition to NHS and school library services. The regional training groups in Wales now come under the remit of the CyMAL Regional Development Officers (RDOs) which means every Welsh region has its own group – whose activities are open to all library staff in that region.
The NWLTG plans training activities for the region, aimed primarily at frontline staff although also offering training relevant to professionally qualified staff. In recent years the group has organised training on reader development, web 2.0, presentations skills, basic skills awareness, advocacy training and dealing with challenging behaviour. The group has used external trainers as well as making using of expertise from within the group.
The group has the following activities planned for 2008/9 (all of which are free to library staff in the region) and the group is currently working on developing a programme of job swaps and job shadowing across sectors within the region:
Thursday October 16 – Internet searching & ICT support (Rhyl Public library)
Friday November 14 – Internet Safety & Web 2.0 (Colwyn Bay Public Library)
Monday December 1 – Information sharing – using VLEs, Web 2.0 and community information portals (Deeside College)
Wednesday January 28 – Delivering Information Literacy (Coleg Llandrillo)
